At
the National Gallery in London, there was an exhibit titled, “Eden to Empire.”
Thomas Cole (1801-1848) was an emigrant artist who then founded the bucolic
Hudson School of American painting. He painted five pictures, reflecting the
successive development of a landscape from pastoral bliss to its descent into
social dissension and chaos. As social order deteriorates, events have a way of
spiraling out of control and then order is imposed from without…ending
democracy.
